All last week I meditated on “believing big.” I also continued in prayer, asking God to establish His will in my life—that there would be none of me and all of Him. Many of you bore witness to the devotion, letting me know that you too are “believing big” regarding a hardship in your life or something God has put on your heart to do.
But I’m wondering if you noticed what I noticed. As I sought to walk with increased faith, there was—right alongside—the temptation to consider all of the reasons why this thing I’m believing big about is hard and challenging. The temptation rose up to doubt. But in order to “believe big,” we can’t focus on the “bigness” of the situation. We can’t even focus on ourselves. Our focus needs to remain above.
We’ve got to “believe big” about who God is.
I love how God Himself asks the question, “To whom then will you liken Me that I should be his equal?” (Isaiah 40:25 NASB). There’s none like Him! He says, “Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power not one of them is missing” (Isaiah 40:26).
Our God is an awesome God! He is sovereign over heaven and earth, ruler of the nations. In fact, He says, “Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales” (Isaiah 40:15). He “reduces rulers to nothing” and “makes the judges of the earth meaningless” (40:23). He goes on to say: “Scarcely have they been planted, scarcely have they been sown, scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, but He merely blows on them and they wither, and the storm carries them away like stubble” (40:24).
If He holds that much power over the nations, why are we tempted to believe He can’t handle the things that concern us? Or maybe you’re tempted to believe that because He’s so powerful, He can’t be bothered with your situation. You might think you’re insignificant compared to the matters of the universe that command His attention.
But this same powerful God who rules heaven and earth also knows when a single sparrow falls to the ground, and He tells us we are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:30-31). This same powerful God is a God of love, a God who cares.
As we walk the walk of faith—believing and not doubting—let’s keep our minds set on the King of glory. And let us walk in obedience, so that He may be glorified through His work in our lives.
Heavenly Father, I praise You with the words of King David, for “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV). I pray that You would be lifted up in my heart at all times, that I would not lose sight of You. Help me to walk in obedience, that You may be glorified when you do “big things” in my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
